The First Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Përparim Kryeziu, and the advisor to Minister Hajrulla Çeku, Arta Berisha, took part in a roundtable discussion organized to mark the 45th anniversary of the 1981 student demonstrations.
The event was organized by the Association of Political Prisoners of Kosovo, the “Lëvizja” Society, and organizations that emerged from the Kosovo Liberation Army.
At the roundtable, the historical importance of the 1981 nationwide demonstrations was emphasized, considering them the beginning of a significant historical turning point toward freedom and independence.
During the discussion, the events and the actors who participated and organized these demonstrations were recalled, as well as the political situation that preceded and followed them.
It was highlighted how students initially organized with demands to improve conditions in the cafeteria and dormitories, which served as the spark for the demonstration held on March 11, 1981.
The 1981 demonstrations were violently suppressed by the Yugoslav police; thousands of Albanians were arrested and imprisoned, while organizers and participants were politically persecuted for years.
On this jubilee anniversary, as every year, we honor and elevate the courage of the students who became initiators of an uprising that later became nationwide. We remember the price and devotion for freedom and independence, and we recall the strength and resilience of our people.
Glory to all those killed by the Yugoslav police during the 1981 demonstrations, and eternal gratitude for the efforts of that generation for the freedom of Kosovo and for the Republic of Kosovo.
